Assisi - Through My Camera Lens

On April 22nd 1972 David and I got married and came to Italy for our honeymoon, as we had already developed a shared love of this beautiful country. We decided that we would like to celebrate this years special Ruby Wedding Anniversary and forty years of marriage quietly just the two of us.
We chose Assisi as somewhere we would like to spend a few days. We spent two nights there at the Hotel Pallotta which I have posted about specifically on my Travel Tales blog. It was the perfect choice, not very far away from us to drive but rather than do a tourists rush exploration we had time to stroll around and soak up the atmosphere, which I hope to share with you via this selection of photographs. We did visit a couple of other Umbrian towns on the way to Assisi and on the way home again which I hope may be the subjects of other posts sometime.

If you are interested in more photos from the weekend they can be viewed in my Flickr Albums Umbria Weekend - April 2012

                                                                Hotel Pallotta

Assisi is a town and local commune (council area), in the province of Perugia in the region of Umbria on the western slopes of Monte Subasio at 400 metres. The town is built of white and rose coloured stone and has retained its charm for many centuries with its narrow steep and winding roads. Despite the many tourists, wander away from the main areas and you are taken back to another era.

Famous as the birthplace of St Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in Assisi in 1208 and St Clare who formed the Poor Sisters, later known as the Order of the Poor Clares.   Assisi contains many examples of  the genius and creativity of the human race stretching right back to the Middle Ages, so it is no surprise that since 2000 the town has been listed on Unesco's World Heritage List.
As mentioned earlier this collection of collages of my photos are casual shots taken during our wanderings so I have left them unlabelled for informality. The main tourist attractions are all easily identified from guidebooks in print and on-line for those of you not already familiar with the town. My intention is just to try and share some of the atmosphere via the photos not provide a historical or factual post.
There are plenty of sources for those of you that are interested in reading more about the history of Assisi, stating with Wikipedia and Assisi Online.

That is the end of the Assisi tour as seen through the lens of my camera, which I hope has been of interest.

Assisi Coat of Arms with thanks to Wikipedia, the rest of the photos are my own from My Flickr Photo Albums Umbria Weekend - April 2012

I have decided that I will also publish posts that are about our travel within Italy on my other blog Travel Tales as it is attracting a different selection of readers.

  11. Hi Linda,

Once again, Congratulations on your anniversary.

The hotel is definitely to die for, as are the stunning views, you just couldn't ask for more amazing scenery really.

This would be our kind of break for sure, with all the history and architecture to see and experience and plenty of Al Fresco dining facilities to enjoy the local food ..... Heaven!!

  25. Happy 40th Anniversary to you and your husband Lindy. i loved going back to Assisi with you. We only spent a day there last June. Your pictures bring back memories of exploring the streets. We were disappointed that Santa Chiara was closed for the afternoon but enjoyed everything else about Assisi. I'll look forward to spending some time on your travel blog.

  30. What a beautiful collection of photographs! Assisi is one of my favorite places on Earth because there is something so special & unexplainable in the air there. On our last trip there I captured similar images to come home to a "damaged card" and lost every single one of them (I have never recovered emotionally I tell ya!), so Grazie mille for sharing these gorgeous photos, it brings back special memories for us! This entry will surely be bookmarked!

Congratulations on your special anniversary as well! Such a lovely place to celebrate! AUGURI ! XX

I got a warning tonight when I tried to comment so I wasn't able to comment. Would you send me the link to the travel blog you have started and I will try to visit it.

  32. Happy Anniversary.
It's been many years since I was in Assisi, but I remember it as a warm and cloudy end-of-March day. There were no crowds at all, and we wandered at will - lovely memories! Thanks for reminding me of a wonderful holiday.

  33. These are wonderful pictures that make me want to be in Assisi so much.
The horse and rider statue and the monk are especially touching.

  34. What a wonderful city it is. We visited on a blazing hot day, but the view from outside the city was beautiful in a different way from yours.

I would really love to go back. You look at everything and then so much of it vanishes from your brain....

Or it does from mine. :) Your pictures just reminded me.

  36. Congratulations on your special anniversary, how wonderful. I think your informal collage is a wonderful idea and you have beautifully captured the spirit of Assisi. I have travelled much of Italia as you know, but I have yet to go there on pilgrimage. It remains near the top of my list because of St Clare and St Francis.

Once again, you have brightened up a dreary Irish evening for me and I shall dream of my beloved Italia tonight thanks to you X

  49. Gosh, you managed to get the best out of the light. They were tough photography conditions - as I found out that same weekend. Well done indeed! It really was dreadfully grey - but despite that, I have to say that I thought Assisi was wonderful and would happily go back another time.

A wee question for you - how do you do your mosaics? Is it a Flickr program? I ended up doing some in Photoshop the other week but wasn't really happy with them. Yours have come out beautifully, though. :)

  53. Lindy, this is absolutely gorgeous! Makes me want to pack my bags right now and go to Italy. Alas, it will have to wait a little longer as I've recently purchased a studio in Sydney and this will be my base until I am ready to travel. I am moving in 2 weeks' time, after some renovations.

So until I can visit Italy, I will live in Italy through you :-) Thank you for sharing your lovely photos!
